Working outdoors in winter is often more than uncomfortable. It can be life-threatening if hypothermia sets in.\n\n### Explain Dangers\n\nIt’s easy to be deceived by a sunny winter’s day, especially when you’re working hard. But when you work in cold and wet conditions, you’re at risk for serious cold illnesses.\n\nHypothermia and frostbite can sneak up on you unexpectedly, especially when you’re focused on your job. Hypothermia occurs when the core temperature of your body falls below the normal level. If your body becomes too cold, your vital organs cease to function properly. If unrecognized and untreated in the early stages, hypothermia can cause death.\n\nIn extremely cold weather, your extremities such as your ears, feet, fingers and cheeks are prone to frostbite, which occurs when your flesh freezes. Symptoms of frostbite are quite different from hypothermia. The exposed skin will first appear reddish, and then a grayish-white color.\n\nBoth hypothermia and frostbite can progress to a medical emergency and therefore require immediate first aid treatment.\n\nSymptoms of hypothermia include shivering, chattering teeth, confusion, slurred speech, lack of coordination and eventually unconsciousness.\n\n### Wind Chill\n\nThe wind accelerates heat loss. For example, when the air temperature is -30°C:\n\n- With 16 km/h wind your skin can freeze in about a minute\n- With 48 km/h wind your skin can freeze in less than 30 seconds\n\n### Identify Controls\n\nHere’s how to control cold stress:\n\n- Wear several layers of clothing rather than one thick layer to capture air as an insulator\n- Wear synthetic fabrics next to the skin to “wick” away sweat\n- If conditions require, wear a waterproof or wind-resistant outer layer\n- Wear warm gloves\n- Wear hats and hoods. You may need a balaclava\n- Tight-fitting footwear restricts blood flow. We are surrounded by hazards that could cause harm, but most of the time we safely negotiate these hazards and arrive at our destination safely.\n\n### Unsafe acts:\n\nMore difficult to recognize and correct because they involve human factors. For example, snow creates an unsafe condition to drive in, but that hazard is magnified by driving in the snow without slowing down or by not maintaining safe distances. The act of driving too fast and not leaving safe stopping distances makes an unsafe condition even worse.\n\n### Unsafe acts are linked to our behavior:\n\nHow we behave (our actions) may not be related to our skill level. In other words, some of our most skilled employees might actually display some of the most dangerous behaviors.
